Northern Echo Building

Located in the centre of Darlington, The Northern Echo Building opened in 1917 and has been home to generations of newspaper workers ever since. However, changes to the journalism industry, coupled with a rise in digital operations, have led to large parts of the building becoming unoccupied with the building now housing only a fraction of the numbers who once worked

The project proposes converting the upper floors into a mix of one and two bedroom residential apartments with the ground floor retained for commercial or leisure. Options were also explored to demolish parts of the rear buildings, which where a later additions, to increase size of the internal courtyard and accommodate more apartments.

This project was completed by Stu Kent while working at a previous practice.

Former office areas highlight how technically has progressed.
